Background

The first DataCamp Everyone Can Learn Python Scholarship Award Program is now open for entries. The problem below tests the Python and SQL skills that you gained from the Introduction to Python and Introduction to SQL, and pairs them with your existing problem solving and creative thinking skills.

Eligibility

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Currently enrolled in secondary school (i.e. high school), post-secondary school (college, university, or trade school), or a postgraduate degree program
  • Do not have a post-secondary degree in computer science, data science, data analytics or a similar or related field of study
  • You will need to create a unique DataCamp account to access the competition.
  • Entries must be the unique, original content solely created by the entrant and solely for the purpose of the scholarship
  • DataCamp reserves the right to disqualify any entry that violates the terms of conditions of the scholarship program

It is recommended that applicants complete at least the Introduction to Python and Introduction to SQL courses on DataCamp.com as the application questions will rely heavily on topics covered in those materials. Both of these courses are available for free.

How to Apply

  • Submit your information via the scholarship application form.
  • Sign up to DataCamp in order to see the scholarship submission page.
  • Submit your scholarship application on the scholarship submission page. Scholarship applications take the form of a workspace publication. Make sure the scholarship application is publicly visible in order to be entered for consideration.
  • You must complete all 3 of the items above, before the scholarship deadline, in order for your application to be valid.
  • The background information is that you volunteer for a public policy advocacy organization in Canada, and your colleague has asked you to help her draft recommendations for guidelines on CO2 emissions rules. After researching emissions data for a wide range of Canadian vehicles, she would like you to investigate which vehicles produce lower emissions. Applicable data is provided on the scholarship application.
  • All applications must be submitted in English.

Entries in position 101 or below will not proceed to the next stage.

Response quality (65%)

  • Accuracy (20%): The response must be representative of the original data and free from errors.
  • Clarity (20%): The response must be easy to understand and clearly expressed.
  • Completeness (15%): The response must be a full report that responds to the question posed.
  • Insights (10%): The response must contain some insights based on the data based on your own judgment and interpretation.

Storytelling (20%)

  • How well the response is connected to the original data.
  • How the narrative and whole response connects together.
  • Balancing with making the response in-depth but also concise.
  • How the response flows from one point to the next.

DataCamp, Inc. Scholarship Program Terms & Conditions

1. ELIGIBILITY

To apply for the DataCamp Everyone Can Learn Python Scholarship Award Program (the "Scholarship"), you must be at least eighteen (18) years old at the time of submission. Additionally, you must (i) currently be enrolled as either a part-time or full-time student in secondary school (i.e. high school), post-secondary institution of higher learning (college, university, or trade school), or a postgraduate degree program during the entirety of the 2022 - 2023 academic year and (ii) not have earned or attained a post-secondary degree in computer science, data science, data analytics or a similar or related field of study. You cannot apply for the Scholarship if you are located in a country which is subject to UK, US or Australian trade restrictions. Current employ­ees, officers, directors and agents of DataCamp, Inc. ("Sponsor") and its related companies, members of their immediate families, and persons residing at the same address, are not eligible to apply for the Scholarship. If you do not meet the foregoing eligibility criteria, please do not apply for the Scholarship. Each eligible applicant may submit only one application for the Scholarship per calendar year and joint submissions are not allowed. A previous recipient or beneficiary of the Scholarship is not eligible to re-apply. Your submission of an application for the Scholarship constitutes your consent to be bound in all respects by these terms and conditions, and your unconditional acceptance thereof and of the decisions of the Sponsor, which shall be final and binding. If you do not agree to the terms and conditions of these rules, please do not submit an application for the Scholarship. Void where prohibited.

2. HOW TO APPLY

To apply for the Scholarship, you must complete the application on or before the application deadline of 00:00 GMT, 31 March 2023. To complete the application, you must 1) submit your information via the scholarship application form, 2) log in to, or register for, DataCamp through your own unique DataCamp account, and 3) go to the scholarship submissions page where you will find the problems to solve and the forms for submitting your final application materials. You must complete all 3 steps in order for your application to be valid. There is no purchase of any kind necessary to apply for the Scholarship or to register with the Sponsor. Any written portion of your application must be in English. All content submitted in connection with your application, including any images, must be submitted in accordance with any technical specifications set forth in the application and shall, for the avoidance of doubt, be subject to the terms and conditions of Section 7 ("Ownership of Content") of these rules, below. No substitutions or corrected applications will be accepted once you have submitted your original materials. All applications received after the application deadline will be automatically disqualified. Applications that are obscene, pornographic, libelous or supportive of illegal or unlawful activity, or that missappropriate a third party's intellectual property will be disqualified. In connection with the rights granted in Section 7 of these rules, no applications will be returned. The Sponsor assumes no responsibility for lost, late, misdirected, or unintelligible entries.

3. SELECTION OF POTENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

The Sponsor is looking for eligible applicants who follow directions and submit applications that are well-written and clearly and creatively address the topic. On or about 1 May 2023, the Sponsor will announce one winner and five runners up that will be selected from among eligible applicants in accordance with the methods and criteria described below. As part of the application and selection process for the Scholarship, all fully completed eligible applications will be publicly displayed within the Sponsor's platform. By submitting an application you agree and consent to the public display of your application submission and related materials. You hereby irrevocably waive (and agree to cause to be waived) any claims and assertions of moral rights or attribution with respect to your Content. An initial selection based on all qualified and fully completed applications will be conducted by reviewing the "upvotes" received by each application. The 100 applications with the most "upvotes" will be selected for a second stage of review. All other applications will not proceed to the next stage. In the second review stage, a panel of judges will evaluate each eligible application based on (i) response quality (65%), including, accuracy (20%), clarity (20%), completeness (15%), and insights (10%), (ii) storytelling (20%) and presentation (15%). In the event of a tie, the Sponsor may use other reasonable criteria, including the judgment of executives of the Sponsor or an applicant's experience points (XP) on the Sponsor's platform, to determine the award recipients. The recipients will be notified by email, at which time they will be required to sign further documentation as explained below. The Sponsor shall have no liability for any potential award recipient notification that is lost, intercepted or not received by an award recipient for any reason. The Sponsor reserves the right to choose fewer than six scholarship recipients if, in its sole discretion, it does not receive a sufficient number of eligible and qualified applications. By submitting an application for a Scholarship, you acknowledge that the Sponsor and its affiliates may call or contact you in relation to the Scholarship. All or portions of the prize-winning applications may be posted on the Sponsor's website, social media pages, or used in other marketing materials, without further compensation or notice to the award recipient, and the applicant consents and confirms the same herein. Sponsor is not responsible for any typographical or other error in the printing of the offer, administration of the Scholarship or in the announcement of the Scholarship recipients. The Sponsor is also not responsible for any defects, inconsistencies or other errors or mistakes in the display, rendering, reproduction, visualization or depiction of your application materials in any format or medium.

4. SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Five (5) runners up Scholarship award recipients will each receive a scholarship prize in the amount of one thousand dollars ($1,000.00). One (1) winner will be awarded five thousand dollars ($5,000.00). Each Scholarship awarded will be in the form of a check made payable to each award recipient. Scholarship award recipients may only use the award proceeds to pay for tuition, room, board, school fees, books, home study, specialist learning tools, vocational training, tutoring, or equipment to help support the scholar's further study. Applicants agree to be bound by these terms and conditions and agree that the award of any Scholarship shall be contingent upon full compliance with these terms and conditions. If any Scholarship award recipient (i) fails or refuses, within ten business days of being notified of their selection as a recipient of a Scholarship to provide proof of identity, any required affidavit, or any requested tax forms (including IRS W-9 form), (ii) is found by the Sponsor to have violated the terms and conditions of these rules or (iii) otherwise does not meet the eligibility criteria set forth herein, such recipient's award will be forfeited and an alternate Scholarship award recipient will be chosen. Scholarship awards will be paid in US Dollars. If the recipient is located outside of the United States of America, the cash amount will be converted from US Dollars to the winner's local currency according to the applicable US Dollar currency conversion rate on the date of payment. Any taxes owed by any recipient in respect of any Scholarship award shall be the sole responsibility of the award recipient, who, for any US recipient, shall be issued an IRS Form 1099 in connection therewith. Scholarship awards may not be assigned, transferred, or changed, except at the sole discretion of the Sponsor. Applicants understand that the Sponsor is not liable for injuries, losses or damages of any kind arising from participation in this Scholarship program and acceptance, possession and use of the Scholarship award. Undeliverable or unclaimed Scholarship awards will be deemed ineligible and awarded to an alternate eligible applicant. A potential award recipient who is disqualified for any reason will not be entitled to any form of compensation. Awards will be delivered to recipients within 30 days following the applicable recipient's completion of any and all required documentation.

5. PRIVACY AND PUBLICITY

You agree by submitting your application that the Sponsor can process the personal information included in your Scholarship application for the following purposes: a) selection and informing award recipients; b) announce award recipients; and c) provide the Scholarships to the award recipients. If you are successful in your application, the Sponsor will retain the personal information submitted in connection with your application for the duration of the Scholarship and for such a period after as required for any legal or financial requirements. If you are unsuccessful in your application, the Sponsor will delete the personal information submitted in connection with your application within two (2) months of the announcement of the award recipients on or about 1 May, 2023. Except where prohibited, by accepting a Scholarship award, the recipient thereof agrees that the Sponsor may, without any limitation or further compensation or notice, use his or her name, voice and likeness in any and all media, worldwide, for the purpose of advertising and promoting the Sponsor or its products and services, or the Scholarship program. By submitting your an application for the Scholarship and accepting any award, you agree to provide any reasonable information requested by the Sponsor in connection with publicity relating to the Scholarship, including requests for a photograph the applicant and a quote that describes their feelings about being awarded the scholarship, which will be used on DataCamp's website, marketing materials, and social media channels. Scholarship recipients may opt out of participating in any marketing or publicity campaigns by contacting the Sponsor at [email protected].

6. FURTHER DOCUMENTATION

Except where prohibited by law, potential Scholarship recipients may be required to complete and return an Affidavit of Eligibility, Publicity/Liability Release, and any other tax forms and proof of identity required by the Sponsor within ten (10) business days of noti­fication or the applicant with the application with the next highest score will become an alternate potential Scholarship award recipient. If notification to a potential Scholarship recipient is returned as undeliverable, the applicant with the application with the next highest score may become an alternate potential Scholarship recipient.

7. OWNERSHIP OF CONTENT

In consideration of your being considered for the award of a Scholarship, your application, including all written material in any form, ideas, code, and imagery submitted therewith (collectively, "Content") become the property of the Sponsor upon submission and will not be returned. The Content may be posted on the Sponsor's website, or used in other marketing materials, without further compensation or notice to you. By submitting an application, you hereby grant (and represent, warrant and covenant that you have the right to grant) the Sponsor an irrevocable (except where prohibited by law), perpetual, non-exclusive, royalty-free and fully-paid-up, worldwide license to reproduce, distribute, publicly display and perform, prepare derivative works of, incorporate into other works, and otherwise use and exploit your application and your Content, and to grant sublicenses of the foregoing rights, through any medium, whether alone or in combination with other content or materials, in any manner and by any means, method or technology, whether now known or hereafter created. You hereby irrevocably waive (and agree to cause to be waived) any claims and assertions of moral rights or attribution with respect to your Content. The Sponsor shall have no obligation (express or implied) to use any application, or to otherwise exploit any Content or to continue the development, production, distribution or exploitation thereof, and the Sponsor may at any time abandon the use of any Content for any reason.

8. REPRESENTATIONS, WARRANTIES & INDEMNIFICATION

By entering an application for a Scholarship award, you represent and warrant to the Sponsor as follows: (i) your application, including any Content submitted therewith, is your own original, previously unpublished, and previously unproduced work or creation and not the product of any collaboration or group effort; (ii) has been created solely for the purpose of applying for the Scholarship; (iii) is not the subject of any actual or threatened litigation or claim of infringement of the rights of any third party; (iv) any Content you submit to the Sponsor neither infringes upon nor violates the intellectual property rights or other rights of any other person or entity; (v) any Content you submit to the Sponsor does not and will not violate any applicable laws shall meet all applicable conditions for submission set forth above. You hereby agree to indemnify and hold the Sponsor harmless from and against any and all third party claims, actions or proceedings of any kind and from any and all damages, liabilities, costs and expenses relating to or arising out of any breach or alleged breach by you of any of the warranties, representations or agreements hereunder.

9. IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ: GENERAL RELEASE AND LIMITATIONS ON LIABILITY

By entering the Scholarship, each applicant acknowledges and agrees that the Sponsor, its related companies, affiliates, and each such company's respective employees, officers, directors and agents are not responsible for any costs, injuries, losses, or damages of any kind arising from or in connection with: (i) your participation in the Scholarship; (ii) incomplete, lost, late, misdirected or illegible entries or for failure to receive your application due to any cause whatsoever, including without limitation, human, transmission, or technical problems, failures, or malfunctions of any kind, whether originating with sender, or otherwise, that may limit your ability to participate in the scholarship program; or (iii) any injury or damage resulting, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, from participation in the scholarship program or the use of any scholarship award, including, without limitation, claims, costs, injuries, losses and damages related to personal injuries, death, damage to, loss or destruction of property, or any claims, costs, injuries, losses, or damages related to or based on your rights of publicity or privacy, or your claim that you have somehow been defamed or portrayed in a false light. Spon­sor assumes no responsibility for any damage to an applicant's computer system that is occasioned by accessing the Sponsor's website or participating in the Scholarship, or for any computer system, phone line, hardware, software or program malfunctions, or other errors, failures, delayed computer transmissions or network connections that are human or technical in nature, or for the incorrect or inaccurate capture of information, or the failure to capture any information. If your application is confirmed by the Sponsor to have been erroneously deleted, lost or destroyed, your sole remedy shall be to submit another application, if time permits. The Sponsor's failure to enforce any term of these rules shall not constitute a waiver of that or of any other provision hereof.

10. SPONSOR'S RIGHT TO MODIFY, SUSPEND OR TERMINATE

In the event the Sponsor is prevented from continuing to provide the Scholarship by any event beyond its reasonable control, then the Sponsor shall have the right in its sole discretion to modify, suspend, or terminate the Scholarship program.

11. DISPUTE RESOLUTION

Issues concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of the terms and conditions of this Scholarship shall be governed by the laws of the State of New York, without giving effect to any principles of conflicts of law of any jurisdiction. The Scholarship is subject to all U.S. federal, state and local laws and regulations and is void where prohibited. You agree that any action at law or in equity arising out of or relating to this Scholarship, or awarding of the prizes, shall be filed only in the state or federal courts located in the State of New York and applicant hereby consents and submits to the personal jurisdiction of such courts for the purposes of litigating any such action. Except where prohibited, by participating in this Scholarship program, applicant agrees that: (a) any and all disputes, claims, and causes of action arising out of or connected with this Scholarship program, or awarding of the scholarship prizes, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action or mass basis suit; and (b) any and all claims, judgments and awards shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket costs incurred, including costs associated with participating in this scholarship program but in no event attorneys' fees; and (c) under no circumstances will any participant be permitted to obtain awards for and hereby waives all rights to claim punitive, incidental and consequential damages and any other damages, other than for actual out-of-pocket expenses. Some jurisdictions do not allow the limitations or exclusion of liability for incidental or consequential damages, so the above may not apply to you.

12. GENERAL PROVISIONS

The Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any applicant who is determined by the Sponsor, in its sole discretion, to be (i) tampering with the application process or the operation of any technical interface used to administer the scholarship program or the Sponsor's websites or services, including violation of or failing to comply with the terms of use of such websites or services, (ii) acting in violation of the terms and conditions set forth herein, (iii) submitting false, misleading or infringing Content, (iv) acting in a manner that is threatening or abusive to the Sponsor, its affiliates or its or their respective employees or to other applicants or (v) unsportsmanlike or otherwise disruptive to the orderly administration of the Scholarship program in accordance with these terms and conditions. In the event of a dispute as to the identity of any entrant, the authorized account holder of the email address used to enter will be deemed to be the entrant. The "authorized account holder" is the natural person assigned an email address by an Internet access provider, online service provider or other organization responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with the submitted address.

13. LIST OF SCHOLARSHIP PRIZE RECIPIENTS

The names of the Scholarship award recipients will be posted on the Sponsor's website.
